As the League of Legends competitive season approaches its biggest tournament of the year, controversy once again shakes the scene. Riot Games has announced a delay in the release of the official Worlds 2025 anthem to remove FlyQuest’s Bwipo following the player’s sexist remarks.

Through its social media channels, Riot Games confirmed that the official music video for Sacrifice, the theme song for this year’s World Championship, will now release on October 13, a few days later than planned, to remove Bwipo’s appearance. “We decided it would not be appropriate to feature him in a piece meant to represent LoL Esports, its professional players, and its fans,” the developer stated.

Riot explained that the delay was necessary because removing Bwipo from the video required significant adjustments during the final stage of production, leading to the new release date of October 13. Since the FlyQuest player was representing the Americas region, there will be no LTA representative featured in this year.

“This was not part of any sanction or competitive ruling but rather a decision about how we represent our sport and community on a global level,” Riot clarified in the post. The Worlds 2025 anthem, titled Sacrifice, will be performed by Chinese singer G.E.M. (Gloria “G.E.M.” Sze-wing).

In early September, Bwipo became the center of controversy after claiming during a live stream that women should not compete in professional League of Legends while on their periods, suggesting they were “more irritable” during that time of the month. His remarks sparked widespread backlash against the FlyQuest player, who was later forced to issue a public apology.

Following the apology, FlyQuest suspended him, causing the player to miss one match of the LTA Cross Conference 2025. The organization also donated his prize earnings to initiatives supporting women in gaming. Throughout the split, Bwipo has been surrounded by controversy, including a dispute with Cloud9 over a scrim celebration dinner and a tense moment with 100 Thieves’ Niship “Dhokla” Dosh, who refused to shake his hand after a match.

Criticism Over Riot’s Selective Action

Riot Games’ decision also sparked criticism. While many praised the move to remove Bwipo, others pointed out the developer’s silence regarding multiple controversies in China’s LPL involving Worlds 2025 participants such as mid laners Zhuo “Knight” Ding from Bilibili Gaming and Cui “Shanks” Xiao-Jun from Anyone’s Legend. Critics also noted the contradiction of highlighting the region’s recent Esports World Cup titles in Saudi Arabia, a country known for restricting women’s rights.
