Riot Games Partners with Coinbase for Global Esports Events Amid Past Crypto Sponsorship Challenges

Riot Games has announced a new partnership with Coinbase, designating the cryptocurrency exchange as the exclusive blockchain and crypto partner for global VALORANT and League of Legends (LoL) esports events. The collaboration will debut at VCT Masters Toronto, commencing on June 7, 2025.

Coinbase is set to enhance fan experiences through custom content segments, on-site activations, hospitality promotions, and giveaways. This move aims to deepen engagement across Riot's premier esports titles.

This partnership comes after Riot's previous sponsorship with FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange that collapsed in 2022 amid fraud allegations. The seven-year deal, valued at nearly $100 million, was terminated due to FTX's bankruptcy and the reputational harm associated with its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, who was notably linked to League of Legends.

By aligning with Coinbase, Riot Games signals a renewed confidence in cryptocurrency partnerships, aiming to integrate digital innovation while maintaining brand integrity. The esports community will be watching closely as this collaboration unfolds.
